This project was a bit of a mad dash once the concept popped into my head, and so I really have very little media to document other than the end result (at least that I can find- if I discover more I will update this page), so you will have ot use your imagination a bit, but I’ll help you out with some backstory: I actually cut & treated a big oak log years ago whlie we were preparing D’s “enchanted forest” themed room before she was born. It was originally going to be a little play table with internal storage, but I noticed it in the garage around birthday crunch time and connected the dots. Now it’s a fairy house!
Originally I had a plan to animate sugar bead cake decorations cascading over the top of the scene continuously and I had a motorized helix lifting tube all made up (that works, btw) but with all the other elaborate birthday plans we had to curb that enthusiasm especially as it would have added workload to Amandas already daunting cake tasks. Anyway, so I did a quick base foam floorboard, trimed out the interior with a rotary chainsaw blade and 3d printed assorted “fairy door” and similar accessories from stock models. PLA’s low melting point came in really handy to contour around the log & heavy bark profile with a little added heat, and some flat marbles & clear epoxy flooring made a cool and elegant floor for our fairies.
Finaly a little battery powered incandescent light feature with build in fairy-sized light switch completed the effect. It’s a handy coincidence that the bulbs fit so neatly into the lamp and window features. Just one custom cut diffusion layer later the end result really turned out nicely.
We scaled a picture frame to match and installed a little printed photo of D in there for decoration and the rest is mostly inhabited with D’s existing fairy furniture and accessories. Turned out great!
